00:00:00
There's a part of
the Christmas story
-
00:00:02
that you've probably
never heard before,
-
00:00:04
but could change your life
-
00:00:05
and bring you
peace this Christmas.
-
00:00:08
Hey, I'm Kyle.
Welcome to Crossroads.
-
00:00:10
And I'm going to
make an assumption
-
00:00:11
that we all know the same
Christmas story, right?
-
00:00:13
You've got Jesus, Mary,
Joseph, the wise men.
-
00:00:16
But what about everybody else?
-
00:00:18
I mean, is there anybody else?
-
00:00:20
Well, the truth is,
the Christmas story
-
00:00:22
goes much further than just
your classic nativity scene.
-
00:00:24
And today we're going to uncover
-
00:00:26
some of the unexpected
supporting characters
-
00:00:28
of Christmas, people
left in the shadows,
-
00:00:30
but who hold significance
for our lives today
-
00:00:33
and can unlock the peace
that you need this Christmas.
-
00:00:37
I've asked my friend
Hannah to tell us about
-
00:00:39
one of those characters,
a woman named Elizabeth.
-
00:00:55
- If we uncover the hidden
characters of Christmas,
-
00:00:57
we can unlock a new perspective
-
00:01:00
that affects our lives today.
-
00:01:01
Hey, I'm Hannah, and at
the end of today's episode,
-
00:01:04
if you engage, you're
going to see how God
-
00:01:06
can actually be good in
the middle of uncertainty
-
00:01:09
and how you can have
peace this Christmas.
-
00:01:12
Today, I'm going to tell
you about a hidden character
-
00:01:14
who knew all too
well about the power
-
00:01:17
of believing in the
goodness of God.
-
00:01:19
Now, when I say
hidden character,
-
00:01:21
I'm not actually talking about
someone who's invisible,
-
00:01:24
but rather someone who
is a major minor character,
-
00:01:28
Elizabeth.
-
00:01:29
So whether you know
the Christmas story or not,
-
00:01:31
the name of Elizabeth
is just not in the mix.
-
00:01:33
She and her family
sort of go unnoticed
-
00:01:36
and kind of like maybe
Best Supporting Actor
-
00:01:39
at the Oscars, if you
know what I mean.
-
00:01:40
Or better yet, she's
like hair and makeup,
-
00:01:43
who actually are a
segment of the Oscars,
-
00:01:45
I bet you didn't know that,
-
00:01:46
but she never gets any airtime.
-
00:01:49
See, just like hair and makeup,
-
00:01:51
she sets the stage for Jesus.
-
00:01:53
To see how Elizabeth matters
-
00:01:55
and believes in the
goodness of God
-
00:01:57
and why it matters to
you, we're going to go
-
00:02:00
on a little bit of a journey.
-
00:02:01
We'll see how Elizabeth
was related to Jesus,
-
00:02:04
was visited by an angel,
miraculously defied science,
-
00:02:08
and had a baby leap in her womb.
-
00:02:11
Now I'm trying to put my feet
-
00:02:13
in Elizabeth's shoes right now.
-
00:02:14
So if you know
the Christmas story,
-
00:02:16
imagine you've got
Mary, you've got Joseph,
-
00:02:19
the Manger, the angels,
the whole nine yards,
-
00:02:22
the shepherds, everyone's there.
-
00:02:23
And basically everything
that you can get
-
00:02:25
in a nativity set if you
buy it at Target for $17.99.
-
00:02:29
No, I'm just kidding,
-
00:02:30
it really is on sale
though for real.
-
00:02:32
Ok, that doesn't matter.
-
00:02:33
I'm putting myself
in Elizabeth shoes
-
00:02:34
because imagine
Elizabeth is not at the scene
-
00:02:38
and she's not even talked about.
-
00:02:40
But I think she should
be because she was busy
-
00:02:43
having a miraculous
baby of her own
-
00:02:46
months before her --
wait for it -- cousin Mary.
-
00:02:50
Yes, Mary and
Elizabeth are cousins.
-
00:02:52
Before Mary even met the angel.
-
00:02:54
Now, Mary and Elizabeth
are cousins, their relatives,
-
00:02:57
and we know that Mary
is Elizabeth's little cousin.
-
00:03:00
And we know this
because the Bible says
-
00:03:02
Elizabeth was old.
-
00:03:03
It's blunt. It's not
even sugarcoating
-
00:03:05
calling her elderly or seasoned.
-
00:03:07
It's just like she was old.
-
00:03:10
And what may seem
cruel is actually crucial
-
00:03:13
because that bluntness
is what lets us know
-
00:03:15
that she was well past
her childbearing years
-
00:03:18
and that her pregnancy
would have been scientifically
-
00:03:21
and physically impossible.
-
00:03:23
Now, this is not
the first time that
-
00:03:25
God would have
used a miraculous baby
-
00:03:27
to begin an epic story.
-
00:03:29
Hundreds of years
earlier two people
-
00:03:31
by the name of Abraham and Sarah
-
00:03:33
also had a miraculous baby
-
00:03:36
that kicked off a
series of epic events.
-
00:03:39
And so here we are
again, with two old people
-
00:03:42
about to have a miracle baby.
-
00:03:45
Now, the miracle was
that she was having a baby
-
00:03:48
as an older woman,
but it was more than that,
-
00:03:50
a miracle because
she was having a baby
-
00:03:52
after years of not being
able to have a baby.
-
00:03:56
She was barren. She
was empty on the inside.
-
00:03:59
She could not have a child,
-
00:04:00
even if she tried
and tried and tried.
-
00:04:03
Now imagine, like I said,
I'm trying to put myself
-
00:04:06
in Elizabeth's space
and in her shoes,
-
00:04:09
what that would have
emotionally felt like.
-
00:04:11
What would it have
been like to want to do
-
00:04:13
the one thing that
you probably believed
-
00:04:16
you were created
for, to have a child,
-
00:04:18
and not be able to do it.
-
00:04:19
She would have been emotionally
and socially outcast,
-
00:04:23
shamed, hurt, defeated.
-
00:04:27
And yet the Bible
calls her faithful.
-
00:04:29
Now, if you're tracking with
me, you might be wondering,
-
00:04:32
Hannah, where in the world
is the goodness of God?
-
00:04:35
And honestly, I'm with you.
-
00:04:36
I don't know,
child, I do not know.
-
00:04:38
No, I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
-
00:04:39
That's a good question, though.
-
00:04:41
My point is you
have a good question,
-
00:04:43
because Elisabeth
was probably finally
-
00:04:45
in the place where she
was OK with being barren.
-
00:04:49
She had spent years
with the whispers,
-
00:04:52
and she was
probably finally over it.
-
00:04:54
She probably was just
like, "You know what?
-
00:04:56
Me and my husband,
who's a priest,
-
00:04:58
are going to live lives
of service and ministry
-
00:05:00
pouring out into our community."
-
00:05:02
And that is right
around the time
-
00:05:05
when things started to shake up.
-
00:05:07
So let's hear how
the story starts.
-
00:05:11
- In the time of
Herod, King of Judea,
-
00:05:13
there was a priest
named Zachariah,
-
00:05:14
who belonged to the
priestly division of Abuja.
-
00:05:18
His wife, Elizabeth, was
also a descendant of Aaron.
-
00:05:22
Both of them are
righteous in the sight of God,
-
00:05:24
observing all of the
Lord's commands
-
00:05:26
and decrees blamelessly.
-
00:05:28
But they were childless
-
00:05:29
because Elizabeth
was not able to conceive
-
00:05:31
and they both were very old.
-
00:05:36
Then an angel of the Lord
appeared to Zechariah,
-
00:05:39
standing at the right
side of the altar of incense.
-
00:05:44
When Zechariah saw
him, he was startled
-
00:05:45
and was gripped with fear.
-
00:05:47
But the angel said to him,
"Do not be afraid, Zechariah,
-
00:05:50
your prayer has been heard.
-
00:05:54
Your wife, Elizabeth,
will bear you a son,
-
00:05:56
and you are to call him John.
-
00:05:58
He will be a joy
and delight to you,
-
00:06:01
and many will rejoice
because of his birth.
-
00:06:05
For he will be great
in the sight of the Lord,
-
00:06:07
and he will be filled
with the Holy Spirit
-
00:06:09
even before he is born.
-
00:06:11
He will bring back many
of the people of Israel
-
00:06:13
to the Lord, their god."
-
00:06:15
Zechariah asked the angel,
"How can I be sure of this?
-
00:06:18
I am an old man and my
wife is well along in years."
-
00:06:22
The angel said to
him, "I am Gabriel.
-
00:06:25
I stand in the presence of
God and I have been sent
-
00:06:28
to speak to you and
tell you this good news.
-
00:06:30
And now you will be silent
-
00:06:32
and not able to speak
until the day happens
-
00:06:34
because you did
not believe my words,
-
00:06:36
which will come true
at their appointed time."
-
00:06:46
- The angel actually
visited her husband.
-
00:06:49
I know, I know, I said
it visited Elizabeth,
-
00:06:51
but that's like the
same difference-ish,
-
00:06:53
because, you know, two
become one, that whole thing.
-
00:06:56
Well, anyway, the
semantics doesn't matter.
-
00:06:58
The point is an angel came,
-
00:06:59
and there is a lot to
unpack in the scripture
-
00:07:02
and maybe even
some question marks.
-
00:07:04
But one of the things that
stick out to me the most
-
00:07:06
is when Zachariah asked,
"How can I be sure of it?"
-
00:07:10
And it sticks out because
-
00:07:11
I think I would
ask the same thing.
-
00:07:13
I think after a life
of disappointment,
-
00:07:15
maybe some unanswered
prayers, some broken dreams,
-
00:07:18
some prayers in my own life
-
00:07:20
that I've just given
up on praying,
-
00:07:22
I think I would
ask the same thing.
-
00:07:24
And I'm going to dare to
say that, Zachariah and I,
-
00:07:27
maybe we aren't
alone in that thinking.
-
00:07:29
Maybe that's you as well.
-
00:07:31
So Elizabeth's husband,
Zachariah, he comes home, right?
-
00:07:34
And he's mute, like, he is mute.
-
00:07:37
He was talking
before he went to work.
-
00:07:39
And then he came home from work.
-
00:07:40
And now he's not talking
and he's trying to sign to her.
-
00:07:43
He's like, "We're
going to have a baby.
-
00:07:45
His baby is going
to be named John.
-
00:07:46
It's going to be special.
It's going to be amazing.
-
00:07:48
It's going to be this
really cool thing."
-
00:07:51
And I can only imagine
that Elizabeth is like,
-
00:07:53
"Are you playing
a sick joke on me?
-
00:07:55
What is happening?"
-
00:07:56
She might be asking God,
"Where is Your goodness?
-
00:07:59
Are you joking right now?
Where is it in this moment?"
-
00:08:02
And you know what?
-
00:08:04
I think that may be
the goodness of God
-
00:08:06
looks like Zachariah
shutting up.
-
00:08:09
Yeah, I know that's
shocking, but I think
-
00:08:11
it was a good thing
because in the next moment,
-
00:08:14
it happened just as
Gabriel said it would.
-
00:08:17
Elizabeth does get pregnant
and for like 2.5 seconds,
-
00:08:21
all things science take
a backseat because
-
00:08:24
something supernatural
is taking place.
-
00:08:27
The Bible says that
Elizabeth became pregnant,
-
00:08:30
and she went into
seclusion for five months.
-
00:08:33
Now, that little
detail about seclusion
-
00:08:35
is actually unclear.
-
00:08:36
We aren't sure why she
decided to be secluded.
-
00:08:39
Maybe she was sick,
maybe she was just over it,
-
00:08:41
didn't feel like being bothered.
-
00:08:43
But it doesn't matter
because what we do know
-
00:08:45
is that it made her next
visitor that much more special.
-
00:08:49
At some point during
Elizabeth's seclusion,
-
00:08:52
way on the other side
of town, the Angel Gabriel
-
00:08:55
is busy starting the
Christmas story as we know it.
-
00:08:58
He appears to Mary
-
00:08:59
and he tells her of
the birth of Jesus.
-
00:09:01
And shortly after that, Mary
comes to visit Elizabeth.
-
00:09:07
- At that time, Mary
got ready and hurried
-
00:09:09
to a town in the hill
country of Judea,
-
00:09:11
where she entered
Zechariah's home
-
00:09:13
and greeted Elizabeth.
-
00:09:15
When Elizabeth
heard Mary's greeting,
-
00:09:17
the baby leaped in her womb
-
00:09:19
and Elizabeth was
filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
00:09:23
And a loud voice, she exclaimed,
-
00:09:25
"Blessed are you among women
-
00:09:26
and blessed is the
child you will bear.
-
00:09:30
But why am I so favored that
-
00:09:32
the mother of my lord
should come to me?
-
00:09:36
As soon as the sound of
your greeting reached my ears,
-
00:09:38
the baby in my
womb leaped for joy.
-
00:09:41
Blessed is she who
has believed that
-
00:09:43
the Lord would fulfill
His promises to her."
-
00:09:51
- We're going to get right back
-
00:09:52
to this story of Elizabeth,
but I want you to know
-
00:09:54
that we're here for you
during this holiday season.
-
00:09:57

-
00:10:17
Now back to Hannah.
-
00:10:21
- So Mary goes to see Elizabeth
-
00:10:22
and the Bible says
she hurried there.
-
00:10:25
And that hurrying
is not her just like
-
00:10:26
crossing the street.
-
00:10:27
That's her traveling 90
miles with what I can imagine
-
00:10:31
was probably morning
sickness and by herself.
-
00:10:34
Maybe she was tired.
-
00:10:35
And she does this
not just to drop off
-
00:10:37
the baby shower gift,
-
00:10:38
even though that's
probably important.
-
00:10:40
She does it because
she wants to see
-
00:10:42
if the Word of God came true.
-
00:10:45
Now, when Mary
arrives, it kicks off a series
-
00:10:47
of supernatural events
and all sorts of crazy things
-
00:10:50
start happening.
-
00:10:51
When Elizabeth hears
Mary's voice for the first time,
-
00:10:55
the baby inside of her leaps.
-
00:10:58
Now I don't know about you,
-
00:10:59
but I ain't never heard
of no baby leaping.
-
00:11:02
I've heard of it kicking
and doing that weird thing
-
00:11:04
where it leans up
against your ribs
-
00:11:06
and causing heartburn
and maybe even doing
-
00:11:08
that little alien swipe
thing that I've seen.
-
00:11:09
I've heard of all of
that, but I've never heard
-
00:11:12
of a baby leaping.
-
00:11:14
And this baby leaps
and right after that
-
00:11:16
it kicks off a series
of supernatural events
-
00:11:19
because Elizabeth is right then
-
00:11:21
filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
00:11:22
And she's filled
because she knows
-
00:11:25
about the birth of Jesus,
-
00:11:26
even before Mary can
get it out of her mouth.
-
00:11:29
Remember that the
angel told Zachariah
-
00:11:32
that the baby would
be filled with the Spirit
-
00:11:34
before he was born.
-
00:11:36
And it's the Holy Spirit
that allows Elizabeth,
-
00:11:39
not just to regard
Mary as her little cousin,
-
00:11:42
but as the mother of the
soon coming King, Jesus.
-
00:11:46
Now, maybe you've yet to see
-
00:11:48
where the goodness
of God is in this story.
-
00:11:50
Maybe you're like,
-
00:11:51
Elizabeth actually
hasn't experienced it,
-
00:11:53
but I want you to
hang on and see.
-
00:11:56
Now the end of that
video that you just saw,
-
00:11:58
you heard Elizabeth say to Mary,
-
00:12:00
"Blessed is she
who has believed that
-
00:12:03
the Lord would fulfill
His promises to her."
-
00:12:06
Now, she was talking to Mary,
-
00:12:09
but she really could
have been talking
-
00:12:10
about both of them.
-
00:12:12
She really could
have been saying,
-
00:12:13
"Blessed are us girlfriends,
blessed are us BFFs,
-
00:12:17
blessed are us
cousins who believed
-
00:12:20
that the Lord would
fulfill His promises to us."
-
00:12:22
Because the blessing,
yes, was the child,
-
00:12:25
but it wasn't just about the
child who was on the way.
-
00:12:28
The blessing was
that Elizabeth and Mary
-
00:12:31
both got to see and
believe the goodness of God.
-
00:12:35
Now what about you?
-
00:12:36
Do you believe that God is good?
-
00:12:39
That He has good things for you?
-
00:12:40
In a sec we're
going to sing a song
-
00:12:42
and I want you to think
about that very question:
-
00:12:45
Do you believe that God is good?
-
00:15:02
- See, I like that song
-
00:15:03
because it's a song
of faith and trust.
-
00:15:07
It says, all my life,
you've been faithful,
-
00:15:09
all of my life you've
been so, so good.
-
00:15:12
And so with every
breath that I'm able,
-
00:15:14
I'm going to sing of
the goodness of God.
-
00:15:16
Now you've got to have
some faith to sing that
-
00:15:18
because there are
days that you don't want
-
00:15:20
to use your breath to think
about the goodness of God
-
00:15:22
because there are days
-
00:15:24
where it doesn't
feel like he's good.
-
00:15:26
But I want to let
you know something,
-
00:15:28
we don't have to just think
about the goodness of God.
-
00:15:31
All we have to do is
believe that He is good.
-
00:15:34
This story takes place
in the Book of Luke,
-
00:15:37
and in that book alone,
-
00:15:39
there's three different
Greek translations
-
00:15:41
of the word good.
-
00:15:43
One of those
translations is a Agathos,
-
00:15:45
which means
worthy of affirmation
-
00:15:47
and morally excellent.
-
00:15:49
You know, I think Elizabeth,
-
00:15:51
who was described
as a faithful woman,
-
00:15:53
someone who revered God
-
00:15:54
would have described
God this way.
-
00:15:56
She would have
said, "Yeah, He's good,
-
00:15:58
but in the sense that
he is morally excellent.
-
00:16:00
I know this because
my elders told me so.
-
00:16:02
I believe that He's
good, but in the sense
-
00:16:04
that he should be adored."
-
00:16:07
You know, I think
that after her miracle,
-
00:16:09
she could have exclaimed
God's goodness in another way.
-
00:16:12
One that's more personal
and one that requires trust.
-
00:16:19
- When it was time for
Elizabeth to have her baby,
-
00:16:21
she gave birth to a son.
-
00:16:23
Her neighbors
and relatives heard
-
00:16:24
that the Lord had
shown her great mercy
-
00:16:27
and they shared her joy.
-
00:16:28
They were going to name
him after his father, Zachariah,
-
00:16:31
but his mother
spoke up and said,
-
00:16:33
"No, he is to be called John."
-
00:16:36
They said to her, "here is
no one among your relatives
-
00:16:38
who has that name."
-
00:16:40
Then they made
signs to his father
-
00:16:42
to find out what he would
like to name the child.
-
00:16:44
He asked for a writing tablet,
-
00:16:46
and to everyone's
astonishment he wrote,
-
00:16:49
"His name is John."
-
00:16:51
Immediately, his mouth was
open and his tongue set free,
-
00:16:55
and he began to
speak, praising God.
-
00:16:58
All the neighbors
were filled with awe
-
00:17:00
and throughout the
hill country of Judea
-
00:17:02
people were talking
about all these things.
-
00:17:05
Everyone who heard this
wondered about it, asking,
-
00:17:08
"What then is this
child going to be?
-
00:17:11
For the Lord's
hand was with him."
-
00:17:18
- Another translation
for the word good
-
00:17:21
is chrestos, which
loosely translates
-
00:17:24
to kindness or benevolence.
-
00:17:26
So after receiving her miracle,
-
00:17:28
Elizabeth and Zakariya
can describe God,
-
00:17:30
not just as a good God
who's morally excellent,
-
00:17:33
but a god who has
shown them kindness,
-
00:17:35
who has shown them
benevolent in giving them a son.
-
00:17:38
And not only can Elizabeth
and Zachariah say this,
-
00:17:41
but everybody around
them gets to say this
-
00:17:44
because they're
witnessing the miracle.
-
00:17:46
They're seeing the
benevolence come to life
-
00:17:48
and they are in awe
of the goodness of God.
-
00:17:51
Now, like I said, that
song we just sang,
-
00:17:53
it takes faith because
sometimes singing
-
00:17:56
of the goodness
of God is difficult.
-
00:17:58
Because some days
you may feel like Elizabeth
-
00:18:01
where you feel like a failure.
-
00:18:02
You feel dry and
broken and barren
-
00:18:05
and there are broken dreams
and unanswered prayers
-
00:18:07
and things and places
that you thought you be
-
00:18:09
and you just aren't there.
-
00:18:11
Or maybe you're
more like Zechariah
-
00:18:13
and you're struggling
to believe in general,
-
00:18:16
how can God be good
when things don't work out?
-
00:18:19
How can God be good
when all of these negative
-
00:18:21
and undesirable things
keep coming my way?
-
00:18:25
Those are all valid questions,
-
00:18:27
and I hear you and
I empathize with you
-
00:18:29
because I've been there.
-
00:18:31
This Christmas, we're
talking about receiving peace.
-
00:18:35
Well, peace comes when
we put our trust in God.
-
00:18:38
Peace comes when we
believe that there is a kind
-
00:18:42
and benevolent God who
wants us to have good things.
-
00:18:46
And all of those good things,
whatever they are for you,
-
00:18:49
they're available to
you to receive right now.
-
00:18:54
Because when we
believe it helps to put us
-
00:18:57
in this posture to
receive God's goodness.
-
00:19:00
You don't have to
be a relative of Jesus.
-
00:19:03
You don't have to
be visited by an angel,
-
00:19:05
defy science, and you
definitely don't have to have
-
00:19:07
a baby leap in your womb to
receive the goodness of God.
-
00:19:11
You simply have to believe.
-
00:19:17
- Elizabeth's
story is the start to
-
00:19:19
the Christmas story
that we never knew,
-
00:19:21
and it can change the
way we respond to God
-
00:19:23
this Christmas.
-
00:19:24
Part of what makes
Christmas amazing
-
00:19:26
is the opportunity to give back.
-
00:19:27
As a community
we go out of our way
-
00:19:29
to bless people during
the holiday season.
-
00:19:31
One way that you
can join us in doing that
-
00:19:33
is through the
Christmas Gift Drive.
-
00:19:35

-
00:19:38
Now there are more
Christmas stories
-
00:19:39
that you may not know that
can impact your life today,
-
00:19:42
and that's exactly
what we're talking about
-
00:19:44
next week on Crossroads.
-
00:19:48
Our modern take on Christmas
-
00:19:50
is that we celebrate
Jesus by waking up,
-
00:19:52
running to the Christmas
tree and opening presents.
-
00:19:55
In other words, we get
what we want now, today.
-
00:19:59
But there's a star
on top of your tree
-
00:20:02
begging you to take
a different perspective.
