Share Your Story | Grow Week 3

People are hurting and desperately need light from others. We can make a difference in their lives by sharing our faith, but what if they think we’re weird?! Today Brian Tome gives us three steps to casually share our story with others in a way that isn’t awkward.

  • 00:00:01
    - You know, what'd be really stupid
  • 00:00:03
is if you would take a light
  • 00:00:05
and put it under a basket or a bushel.
  • 00:00:08
    I wonder what's -- Oh, a light.
  • 00:00:10
Yeah. It doesn't make any sense
  • 00:00:12
for a light to be under a bushel.
  • 00:00:13
When stuff is going to grow
  • 00:00:15
    because it's exposed to light.
  • 00:00:22
Welcome to Crossroads and welcome to the Grow Journey.
  • 00:00:25
I'm Brian, and before we get started,
  • 00:00:27
just what exactly is this Journey thing?
  • 00:00:32
Well, let me start with the word grow.
  • 00:00:34
In the Bible, we see seven practices that Jesus does,
  • 00:00:38
and when we unlock these proven practices
  • 00:00:40
in our own lives, we grow, we advance,
  • 00:00:43
we go to the next place, we feel closer to God.
  • 00:00:47
Each week of the series, we will be looking at
  • 00:00:49
a different one of the seven proven practices
  • 00:00:51
and figuring out how to apply to our individual lives.
  • 00:00:55
    That's the grow part.
  • 00:00:56
    The journey part means that
  • 00:00:57
we're going on a journey together,
  • 00:01:01
a bunch of people going step by step
  • 00:01:03
through a process of self discovery
  • 00:01:06
and sharpening one another and sensing God
  • 00:01:09
moment by moment, week by week.
  • 00:01:12
As a church, we're all doing it,
  • 00:01:14
and we do it by meeting in groups
  • 00:01:16
    and going through the guidebook,
  • 00:01:18
    as well as having something
  • 00:01:19
to see online or in a building.
  • 00:01:22
We'll show you how to do that later in the episode.
  • 00:01:25
    I'm glad you're watching.
  • 00:01:26
And I believe if you engage,
  • 00:01:28
you're going to grow closer to God
  • 00:01:29
    in the next 20 minutes.
  • 00:01:30
    Now, let's get started.
  • 00:01:38
    - Let's talk stories.
  • 00:01:39
    - When I was 16, I was invited
  • 00:01:41
to a Young Life camp in Colorado.
  • 00:01:43
I heard the gospel for the first time
  • 00:01:45
in a language that I could understand.
  • 00:01:47
    - My mom was an Ethiopian immigrant
  • 00:01:49
and she raised me and my brother on her own.
  • 00:01:59
At first, sharing my story was really hard,
  • 00:02:01
but I had to work through some things
  • 00:02:03
to get to a place of healing.
  • 00:02:04
And now I feel like I can truly be myself
  • 00:02:06
    and be vulnerable.
  • 00:02:08
    - Everything changed when I realized
  • 00:02:10
the only thing I needed to do
  • 00:02:12
was just be God's daughter, and that wasn't it.
  • 00:02:15
    - So, God was there for me
  • 00:02:17
and He walked me through that painful time.
  • 00:02:19
    - I hope my story rekindles their faith
  • 00:02:21
and helps them place their faith in God.
  • 00:02:28
    - God uses all of our stories to understand Him better.
  • 00:02:31
    - There's power in your testimony.
  • 00:02:33
    - I have a story worth sharing.
  • 00:02:36
    - You have a story worth sharing.
  • 00:02:47
    - In order for us to spiritually grow,
  • 00:02:49
one of the approval practices is sharing our story.
  • 00:02:54
Sharing our story is likened in the Bible
  • 00:02:56
to shedding light, sharing your light.
  • 00:03:00
You know, there's a lot of -- there's a lot of light verses
  • 00:03:03
or light songs relative to Jesus.
  • 00:03:04
Like, (singing) this little light of mine,
  • 00:03:07
    I'm gonna let it shine.
  • 00:03:09
All kind of cheesy songs like that,
  • 00:03:10
that those of us who have extremely church backgrounds,
  • 00:03:13
who are 50 years old, can remember.
  • 00:03:15
The truth is, for all of the lush things to grow,
  • 00:03:19
    there has to be light.
  • 00:03:21
That's why Jesus says in Matthew 5:14:
  • 00:03:48
Light, shining, causing things to grow.
  • 00:03:51
You know what'd be really stupid is if you would
  • 00:03:54
take a light and put it under a basket or a bushel.
  • 00:03:58
    I wonder what's -- Oh, a light.
  • 00:04:00
Oh, didn't see that one coming.
  • 00:04:03
    Wow, that's really stupid
  • 00:04:04
to put your light under a bushel.
  • 00:04:06
    What's could be under here.?
  • 00:04:08
    Oh, more lights.
  • 00:04:09
    How unfortunate that these lights
  • 00:04:11
    are wasted underneath a bushel.
  • 00:04:14
    How about this one?
  • 00:04:16
    Oh, there's some Lites.
  • 00:04:17
God bless America. God bless America, Miller Lites.
  • 00:04:21
    Wonderful.
  • 00:04:23
Yeah. It doesn't make any sense
  • 00:04:24
for light to be under a bushel.
  • 00:04:26
When stuff is going to grow, it's got to grow
  • 00:04:29
    because it's exposed to light.
  • 00:04:33
I recently got invited to speak at an event
  • 00:04:37
    in Rock Valley, Iowa,
  • 00:04:40
a place of true blue hardcore farmers.
  • 00:04:44
There's a few hundred guys that came out.
  • 00:04:46
A bunch of churches kind of rallied them in
  • 00:04:48
and put posters all over town.
  • 00:04:49
I mean, it was rural, good person America.
  • 00:04:53
There's something about pure about farmers.
  • 00:04:55
It just seemed like that to me.
  • 00:04:57
And just these lush fields all over the place.
  • 00:05:01
    And the amazing thing was
  • 00:05:02
the organizers of the event said this,
  • 00:05:04
    that these farmers during harvest,
  • 00:05:07
    they're working 18 hours a day.
  • 00:05:09
They never turn off their equipment
  • 00:05:10
because it is time to make money.
  • 00:05:13
    Shutting off the machine
  • 00:05:14
    means shutting off making money.
  • 00:05:16
They don't have any paid vacation or anything like that.
  • 00:05:18
They make money while they can.
  • 00:05:20
So, they are saying for them to shut that machine off
  • 00:05:23
and come to event to be challenged and grow spiritually
  • 00:05:26
    was quite a statement
  • 00:05:27
about how serious they were about growth.
  • 00:05:31
You know, that's not too unlike our world today.
  • 00:05:34
Jesus at one time says the harvest is plentiful.
  • 00:05:37
There are people out there that need to grow
  • 00:05:41
and be exposed to the light of Jesus.
  • 00:05:43
If you look at the social indicators in America,
  • 00:05:46
just about every single one is negative:
  • 00:05:49
divorce going up, depression going up,
  • 00:05:52
anxiety going up, suicide going up.
  • 00:05:56
Things that are going down are things like
  • 00:05:58
    happiness is going down,
  • 00:05:59
    contentment is going down,
  • 00:06:01
    personal savings is going down.
  • 00:06:03
It's just it's really, really bad.
  • 00:06:06
    Our world, don't be confused
  • 00:06:07
by how many green, leafy things are in our world,
  • 00:06:10
people are hurting and they desperately need the light.
  • 00:06:16
And if I have the light of Christ,
  • 00:06:18
if I have received Jesus, He's in my heart,
  • 00:06:20
    and I hoard it.
  • 00:06:22
I keep it to myself as if I don't want to fumble him,
  • 00:06:26
how am I serving and loving people around me?
  • 00:06:29
    I'm not.
  • 00:06:31
In Matthew 10:7, Jesus takes His disciples and He says,
  • 00:06:37
"It's time for you to go out into the world."
  • 00:06:40
And He sends them off two by two into all the --
  • 00:06:42
all the basic cities around there.
  • 00:06:45
And He says the basic stuff.
  • 00:06:46
I want you go proclaim the Kingdom,
  • 00:06:47
and I want you to to heal the sick
  • 00:06:50
    and cast out demons.
  • 00:06:52
    No big deal. Right?
  • 00:06:53
Ready? Go. Break. Away they go.
  • 00:06:56
Heal the sick and cast out demons.
  • 00:06:58
You know, you might not have faith or knowledge
  • 00:07:01
in how to heal the sick with your prayers
  • 00:07:03
    or cast out demons.
  • 00:07:05
But one thing, if you do have faith for it,
  • 00:07:07
I can help you with today is to give you the knowledge
  • 00:07:10
of how to share your story.
  • 00:07:11
    Those folks went into towns,
  • 00:07:13
and they weren't just doing those things.
  • 00:07:15
I'm confident they were sharing their story
  • 00:07:18
and what took place in their lives
  • 00:07:20
to help them do that right now.
  • 00:07:22
We're going to hear right now somebody tell their story.
  • 00:07:28
I- grew up in Over-the-Rhine, when it was not OTR,
  • 00:07:32
    but it was crime ridden.
  • 00:07:34
And I had to learn that that environment
  • 00:07:37
and that neighborhood did not define me.
  • 00:07:40
Throughout my life I've always felt
  • 00:07:43
    that Jesus is my superhero.
  • 00:07:46
A lot of times growing up in the ghettos,
  • 00:07:49
like, one of my neighborhoods were so bad
  • 00:07:51
that they closed the neighborhood down.
  • 00:07:53
And when I used to walk through that place,
  • 00:07:56
    anything could happen.
  • 00:07:57
But when you feel that Jesus is behind you,
  • 00:08:01
literally with a cape, on protecting you,
  • 00:08:04
    you're just not afraid
  • 00:08:06
when you're supposed to be afraid.
  • 00:08:08
My parents were not together, so I did not grow up
  • 00:08:12
in a home where Mommy and Daddy came home from work,
  • 00:08:15
    you know, every night,
  • 00:08:17
and we sat around the dinner table.
  • 00:08:18
There was infidelity on one side
  • 00:08:21
and there was instability on another side.
  • 00:08:24
I didn't need to see a healthy relationship modeled
  • 00:08:27
to know what being in a healthy relationship should look like.
  • 00:08:31
But when I believe that I am here for a purpose,
  • 00:08:35
God made me for a purpose.
  • 00:08:37
I don't need to see how to act.
  • 00:08:39
I don't need to see things model in front of me
  • 00:08:41
because I'm here for a purpose
  • 00:08:43
and I have to live to that purpose.
  • 00:08:45
You don't fall for these traps that society has set for you.
  • 00:08:49
A few years ago they were doing
  • 00:08:51
Come Pray for Me in front of the stage.
  • 00:08:55
And always look for the old people
  • 00:08:57
when they're trying to lay hands on you.
  • 00:08:59
And my wife was like, "Oh, there's one."
  • 00:09:02
    "Okay, fine, I'll go."
  • 00:09:04
And she put her hands on me.
  • 00:09:06
And she goes, "You feel like you were lost,
  • 00:09:11
    like you're in the woods
  • 00:09:12
and there's so many different paths."
  • 00:09:15
    I was like,
  • 00:09:17
    "That's exactly how I felt."
  • 00:09:19
And she goes, "God is saying, just trust Him.
  • 00:09:23
Trust Him. He wants you to trust Him."
  • 00:09:25
You know, like, 50 to 100 people can see the same exact movie
  • 00:09:30
and walk away with completely different versions
  • 00:09:34
and things that stood out to them.
  • 00:09:36
    Everybody has a story.
  • 00:09:38
Your story is going to hit some people in one way,
  • 00:09:42
and it's going to make people feel
  • 00:09:44
that another person didn't feel from words that you said.
  • 00:09:48
If you can impact one person, that is all it takes.
  • 00:09:54
If there's a room full of 50 people that see your movie
  • 00:09:58
and only one person walks away with a message,
  • 00:10:01
    that's all that matters.
  • 00:10:04
    - This is not a complicated week.
  • 00:10:06
    I don't know if you've noticed that.
  • 00:10:07
That story matters, and your story matters.
  • 00:10:09
You have a story to share, and when you do,
  • 00:10:12
it's proven to lead to growth. Share your story.
  • 00:10:14
    - That's exactly right. And you know what?
  • 00:10:16
We're in the Journey and maybe you're like,
  • 00:10:17
    "This is my first time.
  • 00:10:19
    I don't know what we're talking about."
  • 00:10:20
    That's totally okay.
  • 00:10:21
You can still hop in. It's not too late to get a guide.
  • 00:10:24
    It's not too late.
  • 00:10:25
    - Completely free guide, by the way.
  • 00:10:27
    - Oh, it's free. Zero money.
  • 00:10:28
It's not too late to find a group,
  • 00:10:30
to get into community, to connect with someone, to grow.
  • 00:10:34
You can do that at Crossroads.net/Journey.
  • 00:10:38
Plus hop back into the message.
  • 00:10:42
    - Isn't that good stuff? That's great.
  • 00:10:44
You know, telling your story isn't something
  • 00:10:48
that I do while I'm being paid to do it
  • 00:10:51
    because I'm a preacher.
  • 00:10:52
Though I can and should tell my story then.
  • 00:10:54
It's a thing where I do all over the place.
  • 00:10:56
The thing I do when I'm playing basketball
  • 00:10:57
    or when I play basketball.
  • 00:10:59
It's the thing I do when I'm in the gym
  • 00:11:00
and I have an appropriate opportunity
  • 00:11:02
    to talk with somebody.
  • 00:11:03
It's the thing I did actually, after I spoke
  • 00:11:04
at that event in Rock Valley.
  • 00:11:06
I went to the local hotel, they had a little bar there.
  • 00:11:08
I went in to have a beer debrief.
  • 00:11:10
And as I was in there, there was a guy in there.
  • 00:11:12
    I started talking with him.
  • 00:11:13
He was a cell phone tower repair man.
  • 00:11:16
I'm like, "Dude, you do that?
  • 00:11:17
How far up do you go? That's -- are you lashed off?
  • 00:11:21
    What's the safety protocol?
  • 00:11:22
    Are you scared up there?"
  • 00:11:24
He said, "Well, what do you do?"
  • 00:11:25
    I said, "Well I'm -- I'm a pastor."
  • 00:11:27
As soon as I do that, that shuts down the conversation
  • 00:11:30
or opens it up, one way or the other.
  • 00:11:32
So, we start talking about spirituality.
  • 00:11:34
I could just sense that, like,
  • 00:11:35
um, he wasn't wanting to go further, so I just stopped.
  • 00:11:38
I don't need to, like, give him some formal plan
  • 00:11:41
of salvation with four Bible verses.
  • 00:11:43
If someone's not feeling it or I'm sensing that, I stop.
  • 00:11:46
But I shared a bit of my story.
  • 00:11:49
He might have been ready for the harvest, but he wasn't.
  • 00:11:54
You know, we're so afraid today of sharing our story.
  • 00:11:57
It's almost like there's a conspiracy in America
  • 00:11:59
    that says, "Proselytizing is awful.
  • 00:12:02
    Religion is a private thing."
  • 00:12:04
    Religion's not a private thing.
  • 00:12:05
    Maybe practiced privately sometimes,
  • 00:12:08
    but your religion,
  • 00:12:09
at least if it's the religion of Jesus,
  • 00:12:10
is not meant to be a private thing.
  • 00:12:12
    It's meant to be shared.
  • 00:12:14
    It's meant to be proclaimed.
  • 00:12:15
It's meant to bless other people.
  • 00:12:18
In 1993, 89% of self professed Christians said,
  • 00:12:24
"I share my faith with other people."
  • 00:12:25
That's another way of saying evangelism,
  • 00:12:27
    sharing your light.
  • 00:12:28
I share my faith with other people.
  • 00:12:30
In 2018, it was down to 64% of self professed Christians
  • 00:12:34
said, "I talk about my faith with people."
  • 00:12:36
    That's a 25% drop.
  • 00:12:38
I don't know what it is today, but I'll bet you
  • 00:12:40
from 2016 to 2022, it is a massive, massive drop
  • 00:12:46
because we don't talk about it.
  • 00:12:47
I don't remember the last time I overheard somebody
  • 00:12:49
in a coffee shop talking about their faith
  • 00:12:51
to somebody who didn't have faith.
  • 00:12:52
    I don't. I don't remember the last time.
  • 00:12:54
Maybe it's because we're not growing personally.
  • 00:12:58
Maybe it's because we don't have a heart
  • 00:13:00
to see somebody else grow personally.
  • 00:13:02
Maybe it's because we just don't know how to.
  • 00:13:04
Or maybe we've see it done awfully.
  • 00:13:06
Like, have you seen the video?
  • 00:13:09
    I'm laughing. It's awful. It's awful.
  • 00:13:11
Just Google, try to find the video
  • 00:13:13
of the group of people who decide
  • 00:13:15
    to pull out their guitar
  • 00:13:17
and do a little worship service inside of a plane.
  • 00:13:21
Like, (singing) The name above all names.
  • 00:13:24
    It was -- I'm laughing.
  • 00:13:26
It was cringeworthy. It was awful.
  • 00:13:27
    Let me tell you something.
  • 00:13:29
    I'm a pastor.
  • 00:13:30
I'm pretty big on worship and the Bible.
  • 00:13:33
If you start bringing out a guitar
  • 00:13:35
and doing worship songs on the plane I'm in,
  • 00:13:37
I'm going to punch you in the mouth.
  • 00:13:39
I don't want that, unless you're Jason Aldean.
  • 00:13:41
If you're Jason Aldean, bring it on out.
  • 00:13:43
I want to hear about your big green tractor
  • 00:13:45
all day, every day. It's be awesome.
  • 00:13:47
Your music is meant to be on Spotify,
  • 00:13:49
not somebody in a thing on an airplane.
  • 00:13:53
But at least the heart was
  • 00:13:54
they wanted to share their light.
  • 00:13:56
I think sometimes we don't share our story,
  • 00:13:59
    we don't share our light
  • 00:14:00
because we're afraid of looking weird.
  • 00:14:02
    You won't be.
  • 00:14:03
Just sharing your story, you won't be seen as weird.
  • 00:14:06
If you think that person thinks you're weird, just stop.
  • 00:14:08
But also, we may not share our story
  • 00:14:10
because we don't know how to.
  • 00:14:12
Here's how I do it. Three basic things.
  • 00:14:14
Number one, I give the past.
  • 00:14:17
What was the past? What was my past like?
  • 00:14:19
And then two, what is the point?
  • 00:14:22
What is the point that the light came into me
  • 00:14:24
and I started to grow. I received Christ.
  • 00:14:26
And number three, what's my present like?
  • 00:14:28
    What is it right now?
  • 00:14:29
    So, as an example.
  • 00:14:30
The past: The past was I grew up as an adopted child.
  • 00:14:34
I always felt rejected, I felt abandoned.
  • 00:14:36
I always felt like I was on the outside of everything.
  • 00:14:39
    That's the way I was.
  • 00:14:40
And then someone told me about Jesus
  • 00:14:43
in a language I could understand.
  • 00:14:44
I thought I was going away for a football event.
  • 00:14:47
I ended up going away to have an event
  • 00:14:49
where someone told me about Jesus and I received Him.
  • 00:14:52
    He came into my life.
  • 00:14:53
That was the point where things started to change.
  • 00:14:57
And now, where I am right now,
  • 00:14:58
and where I have been for the last decades
  • 00:15:00
is I never feel rejected by Him.
  • 00:15:02
I never feel on the outs by Him.
  • 00:15:04
I sense His compassion and His presence in my life.
  • 00:15:08
    He's enabled me to grow.
  • 00:15:10
Now that story may change a little bit,
  • 00:15:12
    accentuate some certain things,
  • 00:15:13
blow some certain things out if I want.
  • 00:15:15
    But that's basic my story.
  • 00:15:17
I'm sticking to it and I'm sharing it.
  • 00:15:19
And as a result, people are growing
  • 00:15:21
    and coming to know Him.
  • 00:15:22
    Who are the people?
  • 00:15:23
Who are they that could be in the Kingdom of God,
  • 00:15:26
who could grow, who could get harvest
  • 00:15:29
if you got into their life?
  • 00:15:30
Because you may be the only person
  • 00:15:32
who has the opportunity to share your story,
  • 00:15:35
and then you get to grow as well.
  • 00:15:37
And while I'm at it, I would be really remiss
  • 00:15:40
if I didn't recognize there's some people here today
  • 00:15:43
who this might be your point.
  • 00:15:45
Right now, you can receive Christ right now.
  • 00:15:48
This broadcast was meant as a light to come in
  • 00:15:52
and grow you and bring you to Christ right now.
  • 00:15:55
Seal the deal, say this prayer kind of like this:
  • 00:15:59
God, I want you in my life.
  • 00:16:01
Jesus, I ask for your forgiveness.
  • 00:16:03
I give you my life and I ask you to fill me
  • 00:16:07
with your Holy Spirit as I give you the rest of my life.
  • 00:16:10
    Amen.
  • 00:16:11
Let's do this together. Let's grow.
  • 00:16:16
    - There are three parts to the Journey.
  • 00:16:18
    Step one: Attend the weekend
  • 00:16:21
and receive weekly teaching at a site or online.
  • 00:16:24
Get inspired with the good news.
  • 00:16:27
Step two: Do your guide work.
  • 00:16:29
You get your very own printed guide.
  • 00:16:32
It'll help you create a plan of action to grow deeper.
  • 00:16:36
And step three: meet with your group.
  • 00:16:39
During the Journey we meet in groups
  • 00:16:41
to talk about what we're learning, grow deeper together.
  • 00:16:44
    Go here for more.
  • 00:16:46
    Come Grow!
  • 00:16:49
    - I hope you enjoyed that explainer
  • 00:16:51
learning how to do a Journey.
  • 00:16:52
I've got one more thing to throw at you,
  • 00:16:53
    and it's crucial because
  • 00:16:55
it's on the seven proven practice list.
  • 00:16:58
    It is share your story.
  • 00:16:59
And you know what? We want to know your story.
  • 00:17:02
My story, Kyle's story, your story.
  • 00:17:04
The quickest way to do that is get on your phone.
  • 00:17:06
Now, some of us like to take videos like this,
  • 00:17:08
but I want you to take the video vertical,
  • 00:17:11
not horizontal, vertical. Don't -- you know.
  • 00:17:15
    - I just want to give a special call out to my dad right now.
  • 00:17:18
Dad, this is a chance for you to grow.
  • 00:17:20
    It's the Grow Journey. - That's right?
  • 00:17:22
    - And just listen to what Shep's saying.
  • 00:17:24
She's giving you biblical truth right now. Follow it.
  • 00:17:29
    - That's right. This is how you flip your phone.
  • 00:17:31
    Anyway, you got it.
  • 00:17:32
    - Stories are important.
  • 00:17:33
See stories help us just, like,
  • 00:17:35
break through that barrier of disbelief.
  • 00:17:37
    You know what I mean?
  • 00:17:38
Like, as a teacher, do you ever feel this?
  • 00:17:40
Like, I can say it all day long.
  • 00:17:42
I can make my points rhyme.
  • 00:17:43
I can do all this stuff, and there's still this,
  • 00:17:45
like, "Yeah, that's nice that you're saying that,
  • 00:17:47
but does it actually play out?" - Right. Is it truth?
  • 00:17:49
    - That's where stories push us through it.
  • 00:17:51
In my life, it's the stories of people
  • 00:17:52
who decided to give that actually got me to give.
  • 00:17:55
It's like, "Oh, you actually do this?"
  • 00:17:56
    - Yeah.
  • 00:17:57
    - Gave me the courage to give it a shot.
  • 00:17:58
If you want to give it a shot,
  • 00:18:00
    just go to Crossroads.net/give
  • 00:18:01
to support not just content like this,
  • 00:18:04
but community and world changed all over the place.
  • 00:18:07
    Pretty cool.
  • 00:18:08
    - Hey, we've got some more Journey for you,
  • 00:18:10
believe it or not, and you can find out
  • 00:18:11
what's happening right now next week on Crossroads.
  • 00:18:16
    - Well, hey, today we're talking about growth.
  • 00:18:18
Just like plants need water to grow,
  • 00:18:20
so it is that you and I need water to grow,
  • 00:18:23
specifically, water that comes from baptism.
