Rooted was the first opportunity for my girlfriend and I to be in a small group together. In a fog of masks, social distancing, hand sanitizer, and too much Netflix we both decided that it was time to go after God and community and say yes to this new thing called Rooted we had heard about from a friend of ours.
Over the next 10 weeks we were challenged and stretched to step outside our comfort zones and dove deeper into questions such as ‘Who Is God?’ and ‘How Can I Make the Most of My Life?’
I am not going to lie to you, the daily homework was one of the hardest parts of my Rooted experience, but every week when we came together with our group and had meaningful and honest discussions about God in a judgement-free space it was life changing. So life changing, in fact, that during those 10 weeks, not only did I feel a stronger connection to God but also with my girlfriend. By doing the Rooted homework, reading the Bible, going to meetings, and praying together we had consequently grown closer to each other.
Toward the end of our Rooted journey, Kyle Ranson gave a message down at Yeatman’s Cove about how the secret to having healthy relationships in your life is placing trust in the relational gaps between you and others. Following that message, in tandem with our Rooted group experience, I wanted to pour trust in every gap I could find between my girlfriend and I and lock it in for life. That very week I went out and bought a ring, got down on one knee, and popped the question. She said yes!
Looking back, it is amazing how God works. I had no idea that us saying yes in the beginning would lead to her saying yes in the end. We got Rooted together in the one thing that matters most to us, and that is Jesus. We know a lot of people can’t say this, but 2020 was pretty awesome for us. -Zak S.
